Celebrating the artistic impulse to keep things tiny

Inspired by the dramatic shifts in scale in the Traction Company exhibition in the Fisher Brooks Gallery, Tiny but Mighty explores the artistic impulse to make things small. This Collections Focus brings together works of art from PAFA’s collection that are little in size, but carry immensely powerful visual experiences or messages. Also featured are works by artists who use small things (bugs, drawn lines, or beads, for example) to create larger objects or compositions. All of the artists use a wide range of techniques and materials—from drawing and painting to assemblage and stained glass—and draw on long standing traditions like miniature painting and collage. They transport us into a world that blends both the real and imagined by bringing our attention to minute details and inviting us to take a closer look.

Listen to children discussing the artwork featured in Tiny but Mighty.

This Collections Focus was on view from July 2 - November 15, 2015.
