Take Care of Yourself: A Solo Exhibition by Doah

Exhibition Info
Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building
Doah's solo exhibition "Take Care of Yourself" shows the journey of her artist residency at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) from 2020-2021. Shortly after starting the residency program, PAFA was forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Doah had to move out of her studio with the uncertain promise of reopening.

Take Care of Yourself is a reflection on the personal and communal trauma Doah has experienced since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work wrestles with feelings of powerlessness and insecurity, and the loss of ownership over one's body. The exhibition brings together different perspectives to highlight the cruel realities different communities have faced over the past two years, as well as a collective need for survival.

Doah is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, she earned her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA with a concentration in Painting and Printmaking from the School of Art Institute of Chicago. In her artwork, she utilizes symbolic imagery to explore conflicted cultural translation, immigration, otherness, and femininity, while simultaneously investigating issues of self-identification, including race, culture, and gender. She is also interested in how children develop their identities, specifically the competition between self-understanding versus cultural, social, and political pressures. Her artwork has been featured in exhibitions in Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and in Seoul, Korea. She has been a resident artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Vermont Studio Center and is currently a curator and co-director of the artist-run exhibition space, FJORD gallery. Her work can be viewed at www.doahlee.com.

The Exhibition Reception will be held on Friday, July 8th from 5pm - 8pm.
