Self-Portrait

Susan Macdowell Eakins

This portrait was probably among the last Susan painted before her death in 1938 at age 87. While a sensitive and penetrating work, this painting lacks the strong sense of structure and draftsmanship evident on its comparison to her work in this genre of a decade earlier (1985.68.39.2). A date of about 1935 is appropriate, given her appearance and the deterioration of her painting skills after the age of 83.
