Female Nude Standing with Left Arm Raised (r); Woman Seated at a Table(v)

Susan Macdowell Eakins

This sketch id dated to the 1920s or early 1930s although it embodies the classic precepts of the Academy's educational program of the 1880s. The model is posed at the foot of a hastily dressed four-poster bed in a fully furnished room, possibly Susan's bedroom, that is rendered in some detail at the expense, it seems of the accurate rendering of the model's anatomy. More surprising is the blurring of distinctions between the more professional studio spaces and the personal spaces of the home, a practice parallel to those that fueled the assaults against her husband's teaching methods and his character.
