Triad
Oronzio Maldarelli
Early in his career, Maldarelli became interested in African carvings. They probably influenced his later large-scale wood carvings like "Triad." It is carved from a single block of mahogany. "Triad," as its title implies, incorporates three women, two standing, and one crouching, in a compact arrangement of limbs and forms. The facial features, hands, and feet in "Triad" are given only minor importance. Instead, figural form is emphasized by an overall faceting and texture is created by deep gouges in the background and the hair. The base is a separate piece of wood, probably pine that has been stained.
