"Gemini 2#" was carved in Maldarelli's favorite kind of marble, which he called Milano, presumably because it was quarried in Italy, near Milan. This particular piece has prominent veins of iron pyrites, which create gray lines and patches that accentuate the form of the sculpture and create visual interest. The title "Gemini" refers to the constellation in the Northern Hemisphere that contains the twin stars Castor and Pollux, named after Zeus's twin sons in Greek mythology. Maldarelli made the twins female, for his interest was in the female figure.
