Their Day Almost Over

Zoltan L. Sepeshy

Sepeshy, a native of Hungary, received his artistic training in Europe before arriving in the United States in 1921. After settling in Detroit, Michigan, he worked as an architectural draftsman before turning to teaching. In 1930, Sepeshy became head of the painting department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art; he later served as the school’s director and president (1947-1966). The artist, generally associated with American Scene painting, is best known for his luminous egg temperas depicting small-town life and labor along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Olsen’s Men is a strong example of this aspect of his work.
