Self-Portrait

Hugh A. Cannon

Cannon's first priority in portraiture, like that of most of his contemporaries, was to capture a good likeness. The lifelike quality of this bust is largely due to the drilled pupils of the eyes, which lend animation and intensity to the face. Daniel W. Coxe seems to have given Cannon considerable patronage. He gave this bust and the one of Henry Clay to the Academy as well as a bust of himself by Cannon which was returned to his brother after Coxe's death.
