Reclining Girl

Charles Rudy

"Reclining Girl" was carved from one of the leftover marble fragments from the panel "Noah Receiving a Message from a Dove," 1937 (Post Office, Bronx, NY) The back of the head and the dress from the waist downward are in the same plane, while the torso is carved in the round. The smooth surface of the open book and of the figure's face, neck, hands, and toes contrasts with the roughness of her hair, the support, and the overall pattern on the floor-length dress and the incised parallel lines at its neck and cuffs.
