[Queen Esther denouncing Haman to Ahasuerus]

Christian Schussele

Typical of the historical epics for which he was acclaimed, this image represents a dramatic moment from the biblical story of Esther, an event connected with the Jewish holiday of Purim. Having learned from her cousin Mordecai that her husband King Ahasuerus has been convinced by his advisor Haman to have all the Jews in his kingdom slaughtered, Esther reveals her Jewish heritage to Ahasuerus and begs for the salvation of her people. King Ahasuerus extends his scepter towards Esther as a sign of his favor. Schussele envisioned the story of Esther taking place in a stage-like setting, with exotic costumes, props, and figures arranged decoratively throughout the composition. A canopy as well as Babylonian and Assyrian statues and friezes—this despite the event’s Persian setting—contribute to the theatricality of the scene.
