My role has been important in the struggle to organize the unorganized

Elizabeth Catlett

This linocut is part of Catlett’s 'Negro Woman' series, which commemorates the history of oppression, resistance, and survival of African American women. Reflecting the solidarity Catlett felt within the black community, a woman has united a group of individuals to fight inequality. The starkly chiseled lines and sharp contrast of black and white forcefully suggest the strength, dignity, and endurance of the figure.
