Bliss, Rachel (American, b. 1962)
Born in Rochester, New York in 1962, Rachel Bliss moved to Philadelphia in 1983, where she currently resides. Bliss was raised among a family of working artists and illustrators. She is known for her fantastical, autobiographical works as well as her playful, raw images of animals, particularly dogs and cats. Many of her images are based on interactions with children and other family members. She states of her work, “My art describes itself, and my process in creating it is a constant struggle which includes all the struggles of being human.” Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
