California Ten

Ben Peterson

This is an enigmatic work that combines expert architectural drawing skills with social critique. On a miniature sod rendition of the state of California, a house seemingly breaks apart as if impacted by a very California phenomenon - an earthquake. The state-shaped earthen chunk is rendered in fine cross-section detail revealing the sedimentary layers that compose it. Strips of sod hang limply over the edges. The roof of the house is adorned with as array of brightly-colored sleeping bags and hovering above appears to be a reviewing stand/ scaffold. A series of support beams prop-up the earthen chunk, creating a tent-like space sheltering an assortment of domestic appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, computers, hot water heaters, etc. On top of these objects are melted candles - the residues of some kind of ritual.
