In this 4-week course, mythologist and multidisciplinary artist Dr. Li Sumpter offers a breakdown of the Heroine’s Journey model evident in aesthetic and archetypal patterns in contemporary art and film narratives.

The class will explore the journey through works from Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale and select films featuring female protagonists of African and indigenous descent inspired by the exhibition.

In class 2, Feminine Archetypes and Aesthetics, we will explore questions like: Who are some of the female characters of African and indigenous descent populating contemporary art and film today? What is their motivation and message to the world? This week’s class will zoom in on the characters found in the visual narratives of select works from PAFA’s collection.

Recommended films this week are Crooklyn (1994) and Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012).
