Edna Cooke Shoemaker illustration

An illustrator especially known for the novels Hans Brinker, Heidi, Mother Goose and other stories, Edna Cooke Shoemaker began her career as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Learn about Shoemaker’s journey from PAFA, to illustrator for children’s books, raising a family in Media, Pennsylvania, to her fashioning and enacting marionette performances for her children and later for public audiences.

Univeristy of Southern California PhD student and Winterthur Fellow in American Material Culture Studies Olivia Armandroff will share the stories behind Shoemaker’s collection, which is now in the Winterthur Library’s Joseph Downs Collection and the exhibition she curated around this often overlooked artist.
