The Swedish Film Editor

James Pinkney Havard

This title refers to the Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman, who is famous for his depictions of female characters. Flat, crudely-rendered profiles march towards the projection screen in the center of the composition while elegant women in jackets emerge from the other side, as if transformed. The only detailed face appears in the bottom right, looking directly at the viewer but apparently with nothing to say. By presenting these characters grouped around a screen, James Havard suggests the control that a director exerts through the editing process.
