Sketch for Fountain

Clara Bratt

This model was Bratt's contribution to the Twelfth Annual Collaborative Problem sponsored by the Association of the Alumni of the American Academy in Rome. The program was instituted by the Academy and started by Walker Hancock. The fountain is a circular composition of a merman and a mermaid, holding each other's arms while balancing on a central crest of waves. The female figure looks skyward; and the male, wearing a wreath on his head, gazes at her. Their legs are covered with fish scales from the knees down, and each foot has a separate flipper. The plaster is painted black to simulate a bronze patina.
