The Naug[h]ty Snake

Beatrice Wood

Beatrice Wood was active in the Dada movement, influenced by and an influence on her friends Marcel Duchamp and Henri-Pierre Roche. She was an important part of early modernist circles in the United States. Throughout her career she and her work retained a spirit of freedom from convention. Wood's main passion was love and her artwork frequently addresses, whether directly or indirectly, the dynamics between men and women - "love and its absurdities" - as she put it. This piece is a humorous vision of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
