Faustroll/Square
Thomas Chimes
Since the early 1970's, Chimes has explored Greek mythology, Jungian philosophy, and French symbolism in a series of elusive black and white portraits. "Faustroll," a character in Alfred Jarry's most famous play "Ubu Roi," is one such work. Appropriating a fragment of a vintage photograph of Jarry cycling, Chimes signals his own presence by placing his hat on the French writer's head. The Greek words imbue the work with an Homeric, ode-like quality and signal its honorific and self-referential meanings.
