Benjamin Eakins (1818-1899) was Thomas Eakins's father. Murray was a frequent dinner guest at the elder Eakins's house while Thomas and his wife Susan lived with him. Murray's familiarity with Benjamin Eakins undoubtedly contributed to the success of this portrait. The sculptor captured not only Eakin's appearance but also his personality. The slightly bowed head, straight lips, and intense gaze, which is emphasized by the deeply cut pupils, reveal Eakins as the gentle, pensive but strict man that he was.
