When the Pennsylvania Academy purchased this bust in 1910, it was thought to depict the painter William Emlen Cresson. In 1942, however, the Works Progress Administration catalogued the American portraits at the Academy and identified the sitter as the painter William Henry Lippincott. The sitter's identity is still in question.
