Roseanna Williams (r); Three Sketches of a Woman Sewing (v)

Susan Macdowell Eakins

This work is a preparatory sketch for "Roseanna Williams" a watercolor of 1879, now in a private collection. Williams, a domestic employed by the MacDowell family, is shown here seated in the pantry of their Race Street home. The basket beside her and the bundle in her arms suggest that she is returning or taking away laundry as work.
