Rookwood Still Life

Elizabeth Osborne

"Rookwood Still Life" is characteristic of Osborne's spare compositions of simplified forms and an extraordinary example of her watercolor work. Velvety, delicately graduated transparent washes are laid alongside opaque areas executed with great control and economy. The floral motif is walked through several transformations, from the China painted Rookwood pitcher, bunch of tulips, loosely brushed cups and the pattern on the printed fabric tablecloth. Highly saturated and brilliant colors are juxtaposed to soft, moody areas.
