Market Street East, Philadelphia

Louis I. Kahn

One of a number of drawings and proposals made for a project to redevelop Market Street East. This drawing was made for the Market Street East Redevelopment Project and the Graham Foundation, Chicago, Illinois. Kahn was a recipient of a grant from the foundation and he used the grant for this project in Civic Design. The drawing is a perspective elevation looking towards City Hall. The Pedestrian Concourse above the roadway is shown with figures seated and walking up and down, sheltered by overhanging roofs supported on thin poles. Storefronts and larger buildings are visible on either side of the street. Though a sketch, the feeling and movement of the figures within this urban landscape is superb.
