…I knew you were young…

Monique van Genderen

This painting is a good representation of the artist's work. Beginning with a white ground, van Genderen adds in a collage-like fashion vinyl elements that evoke biomorphic abstraction and Color Field-like staining - however, both the abstract hard-edged forms and the "staining" are actually adhesive materials used in the advertising and automobile window tinting industries. Van Genderen cuts the vinyl by hand and adheres it to the painted panel. Van Genderen pushes the boundaries of contemporary abstraction by precipitating what one might call "medium anxiety" in that her work calls into question neatly defined categories like painting, drawing, and collage. While her work is technically collage since she literally cuts and pastes the vinyl onto given surfaces, her attention to color, composition, and resonance with the history of abstraction demand that we consider her a painter.
