Bateau

Hugh Weiss

With its dazzling interplay of textures and warm and cool colors, "Bateau" is an exciting balance between energetic abstraction, an exploration of pattern and mark making, and a fresh approach to a traditional subject matter. With little distinction between fore- and background, Weiss envisions an ultramarine blue night sky aglow with bright red dashes of paint. The water is broken into zig zags and tiles of reflected light and color, shimmering like the iridescent scales of a reptile. The boat itself appears luminous, pervading the work with a festive but slightly mysterious air. In addition to the visible influence of Jean Dubuffet and "Art Brut," "Bateau" also alludes to Cubism; the boat appears to be seen from multiple vantage points simultaneously, from straight-on as well as above.
