Alexander Hamilton

William Satchwell Leney after Giuseppe Ceracchi

Based on one of Ceracchi's busts of Hamilton (1791-94), perhaps the one exhibited at the Academy regularly between 1816 and 1821. More likely, Leney worked from one of the marble copies of the bust by John Dixey, who gave a marble version (of 1798) to the Academy in 1814. Dixey's copy appeared in the annual exhibition that year, just before the appearance of Leney's print in Joseph Delaplaine's "Repository of the Lives and Portraits of Distinguished Americans," vol. 1, part 1 (1815-16).
