Academy Study of a Man

Emily Clayton Bishop

Bishop completed numerous relief studies of the female and male nudes. This reclining figure, holding a staff, was probably based on a model in the school. It is boldly placed, extending from one edge to the other. The inexpert depiction of the genitals contrasts with the authentic treatment of the rest of the body. This underscores that women students were not permitted to work from a fully nude male model.
