You may be familiar with the artist Violet Oakley but discover the story behind one of her lesser known works in PAFA’s collection, "Nicholas Lokhoff, Russian Painter Living in Florence" (n.d.).
In this lecture art historian Dr. Katerina Romanenko will uncover the story behind once well known and sought-after restorer and copyist of the Renaissance masterpieces.
We will follow Lokhoff's path from a radical revolutionary to a self-taught artist committed to restoring the Renaissance techniques. Dr. Romanenko will dive into the role of American artists, art historians, and a collector in bringing majority of Lokhoff's faithful copies of the Early Renaissance masters, originally created for the Russian Museum, to their current location the Lochoff Cloister of the Frick Fine Arts Building at the University of Pittsburgh.
