The work of caring for an art collection is a particular kind of science. Join Mary McGinn, PAFA’s Paintings Conservator, to learn about what is involved in caring for a museum collection that has grown and evolved over 200 years and now includes historic canvasses like Thomas Eakins’ Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) alongside contemporary installations like Bill Viola’s Ocean Without a Shore. How are artworks constructed and framed? How and why do they deteriorate? What processes and resources do museums use to preserve and restore these invaluable historical artifacts?
