Stairwell of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
Hugh J. McCauley
The exquisitely delicate ink drawing of the stairwell at the Academy was created in preparation for the renovation/restoration of the Furness designed Academy building which began in 1973. As a young architect, McCauley had a particular interest in historic Philadelphia and he gave considerable time to researching Frank Furness's work. The drawing was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy party which inaugurated the restoration campaign. McCauley used the materials of the architect's trade-a multi-layered paper print base covered with mylar plastic sheets, to show depth and color. Eventually blue line prints were made from this drawing for popular consumption.
