[Self-Portrait in Landscape]

Charles Lewis Fussell

Fussell's self-portrait speaks of the artist's love of nature and working "a plein air" (out of doors). In this rather somber, wintry scene, he used a variety of brush strokes in the foreground to give textural detail, and increasingly diluted grey tones in the background to suggest depth. Contributing to the bleak atmosphere, a ghostly bare tree disappears into the grey sky at the image's right edge. A budding spring tree incorporated into the artist's jacket adds a whimsical touch and suggests his naturalist philosophy and aesthetic outlook.
