Portrait of Patrick Grant

Gilbert Stuart

This portrait of a Boston gentleman and Scottish emigrant, Patrick Grant, is a strong example of Stuart's English-influenced style, particularly reminiscent of the virtuoso work of Sir Henry Raeburn. The vivid personality evoked by the sitter characterized the artist's talent for portrait painting, in which he sought both true likeness and aesthetic harmony. Eschewing the conventional trappings of Grand Manner portraiture for a broadly painted tonal background, Stuart brought to the genre a fresh directness that made him particularly popular with American sitters
