The Launching of a Caravel(?): Compositional Study (r); Figure Studies: Seated Woman(?) and Cupid

Peter Frederick Rothermel

According to Thistlewaite's checklist of Rothermel's work, the artist made a painting entitled "The Launching of a Caravel" (now unlocated) in 1848. A caravel, a ship type of the 15th and 16th centuries, may be the boat about to be launched at the left of this scene populated by figures in dress of this same era. A date of about 1848 is confirmed by the list of names on the verso, which includes all the directors of the Pennsylvania Academy in 1847, the year that Rothermel himself joined the board.
