King Louis XIV
J. William Fosdick
Fosdick completed this burnt-wood panel in 1895 and was included in his exhibition at the Academy in 1896. The Academy purchased the panel and installed it in the library. Fosdick borrowed the pose and copied the royal trappings in minute detail from the 1839 marble statue of the King by Philippe Henri Lemarie. Fosdick achieved subtle effects of color in his panel through the application of a variety of pigment stains and buffing.
