Henry Charles Carey

William Marshall Swayne

It was Swayne's custom to work from life and Carey (1793-1879) sat for this portrait in April and May of 1878. The sculptor has accurately represented the elderly Carey's sagging jowls and heavy brow. To give the eyes a lifelike appearance, Swayne employed a technique similar to the revolutionary one of Jean Antoine Houdon: he cut out all but a small fragment of the iris, the fragment denoting the reflection of light in the eye.
