The hawk is shown sitting on a tree branch as if gazing intently at his prey. A small vertical branch with a leaf serves to support the bird. Lead is soft, so tool marks were easily made by the artist after casting. They emphasis the veining of the leaves and provide texture on the bird's chest and the log. The head, back, and wings appear smooth and streamlined with no attempt to delineate feathers.
