Dollar Bill and Cigar Box
Reynolds (attributed to possibly W.S. Reynolds)
This picture depicts a dollar bill lying face up on top of a cigar box. The artist has focused in on the currency, cropping out the entire surface of the cigar box so that the stamped brand letters are cut off, shown only in a fragment. The dollar is aligned so that the viewer sees it straight-on. However it is perpendicular to the orientation of the box top. This enlivens an otherwise staid composition. The support is board, reinforcing the tangibility of the illusory backdrop.
