Dante and Virgil

Henry Prellwitz

An outdoor scene set in a dense, dark woodland, with the figure of Dante at the far left in dark robes, and that of Virgil, in a light robe, at the right, the figures almost merging with the procession of tall tree trunks behind them. Virgil is calming the leopard and wolf at his feet, who had sprung up at the approach of Dante. The overall tone of this picture is dark green. The subject is derived from the first canto of "The Inferno" in Dante's "The Divine Comedy."
