Three Headed Lion
John Rhoden was inspired to sculpt a number of animals in the course of his career. This abstract “Three Headed Lion” was sculpted while Rhoden was at the American Academy of Rome, and bears three instances of a lion's face/head. It was exhibited at Fairweather Garnett Gallery in Evanston, Illinois circa 1955-1961; also in "An Exhibition of Sculpture by John Rhoden" at University of Pittsburgh Art Gallery, September 11 - October 6, 1971 in the Frick Fine Arts Galleries, catalogue by Vincent A. Struzzi (referenced in Elsen, Patricia and Brawer, Catherine C. 1970 “College Museum Notes” Art Journal Vol. 30, No. 1 (Autumn, 1970), pp. 54-81.
