For Taplin, an intriguing aspect of Punch is that he is a figure somewhere between naturalism and puppetry providing an incongruous addition to any real-world situation, and giving Taplin a, "natural opening to the world of social satire." As the object of both derision and a queasy fascination he is, of course, attracted to the grotesque and the absurd.
