Memorial to William Wallace Gilchrist

Louis G. Milione, Sr.

This relief was commissioned by the William Wallace Gilchrist Memorial Committee of the Academy of Music to honor the prominent composer, conductor, and organist. The memorial shows a three-quarter view of Gilchrist absorbed in writing music. Milione was probably given a photograph of the subject from which to work. The carving is sensitive, from the low relief of the eyeglass frames that merge with the background to the high relief of the nose.
