What does a portrait reveal about the person in the picture, the artist who created it, or even ourselves?

This January, PAFA Museum explores the art of self-reflection through portraiture. Join Lea C. Stephenson, PAFA's Kenneth R. Woodcock Curator of Historical American Art, and Douglas Martenson, artist and instructor in PAFA's Fine Arts Certificate Program, for a lively conversation surrounded by the very paintings that inspire it.

Held in the portrait gallery of A Nation of Artists, this intimate conversation explores how artists across generations have captured far more than a likeness, revealing identity, emotion, personality, and the ways we see ourselves and one another.

Discover the stories behind the faces and perhaps see something of yourself in the art.
