Family Arts Academy aims to strengthen initiatives in family development and art education. It's also fun! Whatever shape your family takes, you are welcome to learn about, create and celebrate art with us.

January 15 Heroes and Monuments
Take paper folding to a whole new level as you use three-dimensional shapes to create buildings and monuments out of the architecture of your imagination. Inspired by the newest monument on the Washington Mall – the Martin Luther King Jr National Memorial – dedicate your weird and wonderful structures to someone who has been an inspiration in your life.
January 22 Chinese New Year Explosions
Celebrate the Chinese New Year by making beautiful paper lanterns to light the night’s sky. Bring your imagination to the design of your own lantern, using paper bags, colored papers, and sparkly enhancements.
January 29 Mural Madness
(Note: Mural Arts Dedication program and reception begins 1:00 and precedes the workshop)
Philly’s next great mural is ready! Come for the dedication of the Henry Ossawa Tanner mural that the Mural Arts Program just completed and put your own brush to the faces and inspiring words in the smaller version of the mural we’ll be recreating on-site. In the spirit of Mural Arts, create a poem and block print of someone who has inspired you to contribute to a group mural project.
February 5 ♥Love is in the Details, Valentine’s Day Cards ♥
Create a touchy-feely valentine for your sweetheart. Collagraph is a textured print made from everyday objects like lace, beans, twigs, keys, and bubble wrap. Come join us to try this unique printmaking technique in order to make your cards more special for that special someone!
February 12 From Istanbul to Cairo
Experience the world travels of Henry Tanner for yourself with a sensational Mediterranean dance performance by the Mosaic Dance Theater Company that will take you from Istanbul to Cairo. While they perform, learn from artists how to capture the human body as it sways and swirls and bends and twirls.
February 19 Dance of Color
You’ll always want to find your beam of sunlight to sit in after decorating your windows with these faux stained glass designs. See how easy it is to fill your home with dancing colors every day by creating your own Tiffany-inspired paper window hangings.
February 26 Painted Stories
Celebrate Black History month by exploring the studio process of artist Jacob Lawrence and then trying it for yourself. Mine your everyday experiences for an inspiring scene and then move through color stations in the studios to bring it to life, one bright shade at a time. Note: You will be creating a colorful painting of you and your family in an everyday scene. It may be set in the home, the yard, the ballpark, out and about in the city or somewhere else. Please feel free to bring photos or sketches as inspiration to work from.
March 4 Exquisite Corpse
Is it a game? Is it art? You decide. With heads, legs, arms and bodies created by different members of your family, the “creatures” you design together are often funny and always surprising. Turn this old parlor game into an art project that will have everyone mixing and matching.
March 11 Around the World
Mary Knish’s musical tour of the world takes you across cultures and continents, opening your ears to some of the sounds that a world traveler like Henry Tanner would have absorbed. After her concert, go collage crazy on a silhouette of yourself, filling your image with the people, places, words and ideas that make up who you are or who you desire to become.
March 18 Food Portraits
You don’t have to worry about finishing your fruits and vegetables today – they’re art! Help arrange real food items to make fun and delicious portraits and still life pictures in the tradition of Renaissance artists. We invite you to bring a sample snack to share with the group in celebration of National Nutrition Month!
March 25 Art Career Fair - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Meet artists from 10 different fields of art and learn about how they got their starts and what it takes to sustain a career doing what they love – making art. Slide presentations, portfolios, and blueprints will illustrate their talents and their stories about sustaining a creative lifestyle that will inspire you to pursue your own future. Find an internship! Make a friend! Find a mentor!
April 1 Fooling Around with Op Art
Don’t get fooled again! This afternoon will be filled with an abundance of optical illusions, trickery and fun. Learn to fool the whole family using the secrets of color, pattern and optical art. We’ll be printing, paper weaving and mixing color like crazy.
April 8 Easter-no workshop
April 15 Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh my!
Learn the basics of drawing with PAFA’s favorite furry friends, including the ever popular carriage horse. In the spirit of young Henry Tanner, find the animal that you love to draw best and practice capturing its anatomy, proportions and textures. (Only tame animals included – no actual scary beasts.)
April 22 It’s Spring, Let’s Nurture Nature
It’s the season to get your hands dirty again, creating sculptures and collages from all natural materials. In celebration of Earth Day, bring us your flowers, leaves, twigs, seashells and other found items and we’ll help you a create a truly natural wonder.
April 29 Three’s A Crowd
The art of looking gets turned on its head in this workshop in which what you see at first is definitely not all you get. Learn to make a three-way or corrugated picture that shows one scene from the left, one from the right and a totally different one from straight on, all through the mystery of simple folding.
May 6 Flipbook Flip-out
Flip books are the earliest form of animation. Draw your own designs or characters and discover the secrets to making them jump into action or run all over the page.
May 13 Bending the Line
Bend, twist and fold wire into a one of a kind sculpture to take home. Experience the rush of creation twice in one day as you try tracing the shadow of your artwork onto mural sized paper and contribute your handiwork to an oversized drawing that the whole group can be a part of.
May 20 Family Arts Academy Exhibit
Art, art and more art! Come see all of the wonderful creations made by the Family Arts Academy participants during the past year. There will be snacks, drinks and music for you to enjoy while speaking to the next budding artists of the century.
