Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool

October 17, 2009 - January 3, 2010

PAFA is proud to present the first painting retrospective of Barkley L. Hendricks, a Philadelphia native and PAFA alumnus best known for his stunning life sized portraits of people of color from the urban northeast. This exhibition of fifty-seven portraits and landscapes from 1964 to the present, was heralded as one of the top ten exhibitions in New York in 2008 and will be augmented in Philadelphia by paintings from private collections.

Malcolm McLaren: Shallow 1-21

October 23, 2009 - January 3, 2010

A pop cultural icon for over thirty years, Malcolm McLaren is a visionary artist, best recognized for his work in melding fashion with music. Shallow 1-21, an 86-minute video, consists of 21 “musical paintings” that combine musical cut-ups and short clips appropriated from old sex films into a hypnotically layered, and provocative work. PAFA is proud to exhibit Shallow 1-21 in its entirety for the first time in North America.
