Join us for an Art at Noon to remember with special guests Dr. Eleanor Harvey, Senior Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Dr. Martin Faas, Director of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt in conversation with Dr. Anna O. Marley, The Kenneth R. Woodcock Curator of Historical American Art.
Marley will introduce Charles Willson Peale, his museum, and his mastodon; Harvey will continue the conversation by discussing about her current landmark exhibition Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture and how Humboldt met Peale and his mastodon on his 1804 visit to Philadelphia; and Fass will conclude the conversation by explaining just how Peale’s mastodon ended up in Darmstadt Germany, before it crossed the Atlantic again in 2020 to take up residence in Washington DC.
