The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women

The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women is a collection of close to 500 works of art (including paintings, photographs, drawings, watercolors, pastels, collage, prints, fabric pieces, ceramics, bronze, wood, and sculpture in other media) by over 150 artists. PAFA received this collection as a gift in December 2010 from Linda Lee Alter, and the gift (its scope, theme, and size) was unprecedented in PAFA’s history.

This collection includes works by artists PAFA did not yet have in its collection, such as Louise Bourgeois, Joan Brown, Viola Frey, Ana Mendieta, Christina Ramberg, Kiki Smith, and Beatrice Wood (among others), and works by artists already in the collection including Gertrude Abercrombie, Edna Andrade, Sue Coe, Janet Fish, Sarah McEneaney, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Gladys Nilsson, Elizabeth Osborne, Betye Saar, Nancy Spero, and many others.

The Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Collection of Contemporary African-American Art

The Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Collection of Contemporary African-American Art is a vibrant collection featuring the work of 41 artists at PAFA. Among the artists included are Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Alvin Loving, Howardena Pindell, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, and Raymond Saunders. The collection is broad stylistically and includes work that ranges from textiles and wooden sculpture to prints, paintings, and collage. These artists revel in the myriad options artists have had in the studio since the 1960s and defy being pinned down to a particular style.
