The Director's Table with Alison Saar

After growing up in a family of artists, Alison Saar has embarked on an astonishing career as an artist, moving freely and seamlessly from the deeply personal to more political work, particularly dealing with the history of race in America. Saar’s ability to make work that speaks to history, race and mythology in a time of political turmoil will provide a starting point for conversation when you take your seat at this Director’s Table event.

Director’s Tour of Rina Banerjee: Make Me A Summary of the World

Join Brooke Davis Anderson, the Edna S. Tuttleman Director of the Museum, for a last chance, intimate look at PAFA’s major exhibition project this spring. Banerjee’s sculptures, prints and mixed media works are exhibited in conversation with its historic collection of American art, in a project that the Philadelphia Inquirer declared is “the stuff of each day’s headlines” and attendees will hear directly from PAFA’s Director about the insights, contexts and questions that have been most compelling during this contemporary exhibition project.

Frank Furness’ Masterpiece: An Archives Tour

Go behind-the-scenes of PAFA’s archives with Director Hoang Tran, to explore ephemera and artifacts from our Historic Landmark Building. The Historic Landmark Building was designed by Frank Furness and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Victorian Gothic architecture in America.

The Rhodens and PAFA

In 2018, PAFA acquired more than 275 of the sculptor John Rhoden’s works, several of which are installed in the brand new John and Richanda Rhoden Arts Center at PAFA. Join Brittany Webb, Curator of the John Rhoden Collection, in the new auditorium for a detailed look at the incredible new acquisitions and insight into her role stewarding them.

Introduction to the Brodsky Center

Explore the Brodsky Center, a collaborative paper and printmaking center devoted to the creation of new work that relocated from Rutgers to PAFA in late 2018. View works from the Center’s expansive inventory with Director Paola Morsiani, and learn how paper is made with a demonstration in the new papermaking facility.

Begin with an examination of Benjamin West’s iconic Death on a Pale Horse in the galleries, and continue to the Cast Hall for exclusive access and exploration of classical casts acquired by PAFA at West’s own urging.

PAFA Performances | "Destruction of Memory" Film Screening

In Syria and Iraq, the ‘cradle of civilization’, millennia of culture are being destroyed by war, requiring heroic individuals to fight back, risking and losing their lives to protect not just other human beings, but an entire cultural identity. Based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan, The Destruction of Memory looks at the ongoing actions of Daesh (ISIS) and other contemporary situations to reveal the legislations and policy decisions that have allowed this cultural destruction to remain hidden in the shadows for the last century.

Points of View Speaker Series: Hank Willis Thomas

Globally-renowned artist Hank Willis Thomas comes to Philadelphia for a lecture about his ground-breaking work as a conceptual artist and co-founder of the first-ever artist-driven super PAC, For Freedoms, a nation-wide initiative to promote civic engagement through the arts. Thomas often works with themes related to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture and in 2018, PAFA, added Thomas’s monumental afro pick, All Power to All People, to its collection of iconic American Art.

The Director's Table with Hank Willis Thomas

Curator of Contemporary Art Jodi Throckmorton has said that “Hank Willis Thomas is one of the most exciting artists working today,” a tribute echoed by the contemporary art world’s embrace of his growing body of work. Thomas’s investigations of the flow of images that comprise American culture, particularly as they relate to race, gender and cultural identity will provide a starting point for conversation when you take your seat at this Director’s Table event.
