Registration Deadlines

SPRING 2019 SEMESTER

  • January 11 for classes beginning January 22 - 28

  • January 25 for pre-college classes beginning February 2

  • Registration deadlines vary for Short/Condensed Courses, Workshops, Lectures/Seminars, Master Classes, and Special Programs.  Please refer to individual course descriptions.

Academic Credit and Transcript Requests

PAFA is accredited through the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).  PAFA is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). 

Undergraduate Credit

Courses meeting contact hour requirements (30 hours minimum, not including lunch breaks) are available for 1.0, 1.5 or 3.0 undergraduate credits.  If taken for credit, you may incur additional coursework, and will receive a course grade and appropriate credit that will appear on an official PAFA transcript, if requested.  For an official transcript, please submit a completed Transcript Request Form to PAFA's School Registrar with appropriate payment.

Changes in credit status for Twelve- or Fourteen-week Fall and Spring courses must be arranged through the CE office prior to the third class. Credit status changes for Short/Condensed courses (fewer than 12 weeks) must be arranged through the CE office prior to the second class. Summer Multiple-Week classes and One-Week intensives also require status changes to be completed prior to the second class. 

No refunds are issued for changes from credit to non-credit.

Graduate Credit (Summer Only)

The Summer Studio/Critique Program is available for 3.0 graduate credits.

Professional Development Credit for Pennsylvania and New Jersey K-12 Educators

PAFA is approved to offer Pennsylvania Act 48 Continuing Professional Education Hours and New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Credit.

PAFA is approved to provide Pennsylvania Act 48 hours and New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Credit for its courses and workshops.  Courses and workshops are eligible for the number of hours for which they meet (excluding lunch breaks); for example, 30 classroom/contact hours = 30 Act 48/NJ credits. Courses need not be taken for PAFA undergraduate academic credit to be eligible for professional development credit hours (see credit options and tuition pricing on individual courses).

Educators electing to receive PA Act 48 or NJ Professional Development Credit should notify the Continuing Education Programs office when registering.  Please note:  PA educators must provide their six-digit Professional Educator Identification Number.

Course Tuition and Fees

COURSE TUITION

  • 30 contact hours:  $395 for non-credit; $525 for 1.0 undergraduate credit

  • 30 contact hours for high school classes:  $425 for 1.0 undergraduate credit or non-credit

  • 36 contact hours:  $495 for non-credit; $625 for 1.0 undergraduate credit

  • 45 contact hours:  $595 for non-credit; $950 for 1.5 undergraduate credits

Tuition varies for Short and Condensed Courses, Workshops, Lectures, Seminars, and Master Classes.  Please refer to individual course descriptions.

Full payment is due at the time of registration.  PAFA cannot prorate courses for late registration, withdrawals or missed classes.

LAB AND MATERIAL FEES
Please consult individual course descriptions for any applicable lab or materials fees.

LATE FEE
Registrations received after 5 p.m. on their deadline date will be assessed a late fee of $25.

LOCKER RENTAL
Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $25.  Locker rental is not available for weekend workshops.

Half-Day and Five-Week Enrollment Options (SUMMER ONLY)

Half-day and five-week enrollment options are available on Summer courses only, where indicated (see course descriptions).

All courses are designed for full-time attendance.  For greater flexibility, select 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. courses may be taken for half-day, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 –5 p.m. Courses generally feature more lecture and demonstration in the morning, and extended studio time and individual guidance in the afternoon. Information and demonstrations given during one portion of the day may not be repeated for the other half. Select Ten-Week courses may also be taken for five weeks, either in Session One or Two.

If you begin a half-day or five-week course you may add the second half of the same course for the balance of the full-course tuition.

Half-day and five-week evening courses are available for non-credit only, and may not be combined to qualify for credit status. For more information, call 215-972-7632.

Discounts and Scholarships

DISCOUNTS

  • Membership Discount
    PAFA Members at the Friend level and above receive a 10% tuition discount on CE courses, workshops and Master Classes during the entire year of their membership!  For more information and to join or upgrade your membership, view our online membership details or contact the Development Department at 215-972-2077.
     

  • Referral Discount
    Refer a first-time Continuing Education student, and you and the new student will receive a 10% discount on tuition for one class or workshop (does not include Master Classes).

    Lab, materials and locker fees are not eligible for discounts.  Some restrictions apply.  Call 215-972-7632 for more information.

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • CE Community Scholarships
    PAFA Continuing Education is pleased to present the “CE Community Scholarship” to assist students who demonstrate dedication to their art.  Partial tuition scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis on the basis of need and merit.  Spring application deadline:  Friday, January 4.  Call 215-972-7632 for more information.
     

  • High School Student Scholarships
    PAFA offers a limited number of full- and partial-scholarships for pre-college classes for high school students based on merit and need.  Fall application deadline:  Friday, January 18.  Please call 215-972-2040 for more information.

Refund Policy

Withdrawals must be made in writing via letter or email (continuinged@pafa.edu) to the Continuing Education Programs office.  An administrative fee of $30 per dropped course,  $50 per Master Class or Special Program, and $15 per workshop will be assessed.  Tuition refunds will be adjusted according to the following schedule (less the administrative fee), unless otherwise indicated.


FALL/SPRING REFUND SCHEDULE:

Twelve- and Fourteen-Week Courses

  • Prior to one week before the 1st class:  100%
  • After the above, prior to the 2nd class:  75%

  • After the above, prior to the 3rd class:  50%

  • After the above:  No Refunds

Condensed/Short Courses (Ten or Fewer Weeks)

  • Prior to one week before the 1st class:  100%
  • After the above, prior to the 2nd class:  50%

  • After the above:  No Refunds

Workshops (One- and Two-Day Classes Other Than Master Classes), Group Critique and Gallery-Going

  • Prior to one week before the 1st day:  100%
  • After the above, prior to the 1st day:  50%

  • After the above:  No Refunds

Course Cancellations

If minimum enrollment is not met, a class will be cancelled on or shortly after its registration deadline date.  Students will be notified by phone and may choose to transfer into another class or receive a full tuition and fee refund.  Please register early to help prevent course cancellation.  Travel insurance is recommended for students attending from a distance.

Inclement Weather / Emergency Closing Procedures

The closing, delayed opening, or early dismissal of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts will be determined jointly by the Dean of the School and the Museum Director, with approval of the President. Such closing or delay would include the school, galleries and administrative offices. Decisions regarding the cancellation of special events and evening classes may be made later in the day.  To find out if PAFA is closed or delayed, check one of the following:

Transportation and Parking

PAFA is conveniently located near the SEPTA Market East and Suburban train stations, bus and trolley stops and PATCO Hi-Speed Line station stops.  For maps and directions, please see PAFA's Visitors' Information page.  Discounted parking is available at the Parkway Corporation Garage at the southwest corner of Broad and Race streets and at their outdoor lot at the northeast corner of 15th and Cherry streets. Wheelchair accessible spaces available on the 3rd level of garage and in the outdoor lot. Be sure to get your ticket validated at any PAFA Visitor Services desk, located at the school and musuem entrances.
