Works on Paper collection at the Academy

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts houses more than 12,000 works on paper, including drawings, watercolors, pastels and all media of printmaking. The Academy's collection is highlighted by noteworthy works by some of America's most important artists such as John Singleton Copley, John James Audubon, Winslow Homer, James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Maxfield Parrish, John Sloan, George Bellows, John Marin, Charles Demuth, Charles Burchfield, Andrew Wyeth, Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol.

The Academy also owns significant bodies of works on paper by many artists including drawings and watercolors by Thomas Anshutz; figure drawings by Christian Schussele; sketchbooks by Cecilia Beaux, William Glackens and Kenyon Cox; landscape watercolors by Charles Fussell and William Trost Richards; lithographs by Childe Hassam; prints by Arthur B. Davies; etchings by Joseph Pennell; etchings and drawings by Daniel Garber; watercolors by Arthur Dove; drawings by Violet Oakley, and mixed-media work by Robert Motherwell.

The Academy collections also contain works by major 20th Century printmakers such as Leonard Baskin, Julius Bloch, Federico Castellon, Mabel Dwight, Peter Milton, and Benton Spruance. Among the gems of the works on paper collection is the Charles Bregler Collection of preparatory drawings, sketchbooks, photographs, and correspondences by Thomas Eakins.
